A look at the amazing illustrator from Bologna Italy…

Matteo Berton is a new find for me—I mean, literally today as I write this! I can thank my new “virtual illustration friend”, Laurent Ferrante—a lovely up and coming illustrator himself, also hailing from Italy—for introducing me to Berton’s work. Interestingly, Laurent reached out to me right after he read the teardown I did on Italian Illustrators, recommending I check out Matteo’s work. Well, gee, it’s sure great to have an illustration recommendation coming from a countrymen like Laurent who apparently has “all [Matteo’s] illustrated books”. Anyway, I just had to pass the find along to end the week with inspiration!
According to his online bio, he is:
from Pisa now living in Bologna…[does] illustrations both for magazines and advertising as well as children’s book and comics. I often takes part in independent comics zines and collective exhibitions.
Further, Matteo has been awarded with a gold and a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York, and selected from American Illustrator and the Children’s Book Fair of Bologna.

Thus the works are varied yet cohesive with an amazing command of color, planning, and composition. Let’s have a look at his work…
I have nothing but praise for this guy. What I think I love so much is the variety yet cohesiveness of the work. Obviously, there’s amazing color, texture, and composition. But, there’s also a soulful storytelling aspect to his work which is probably because of the combination of illustration and graphic novel / comics interests.
I’m so glad that Laurent Ferrante “hipped me” to this fabulous Italian illustrator. Thank you Laurent!
